Skill Workshop with Ted Davis

During the four-hour Skills Workshops, participants have the opportunity to strengthen and expand their design skills, regardless of their level of experience – whether they are beginners or experienced professionals.

In this workshop we’ll expand the poster's digital potential by combining augmented reality (AR) with generative design. With a crash course in creative coding (p5.js + MindAR), we'll create AR experiences directly within the smartphone browser (no apps necessary!). With this custom workflow we'll move beyond static assets and open the door to real-time, infinitely changing, generative graphics. While previous HTML/JS knowledge is helpful, it's not necessary and beginners are very welcome. Together, we’ll expand design boundaries, combining printed matter with kinetic digital content.

Biography:

Ted Davis is a Basel based media artist / designer / educator. Since 2010 he teaches interaction design within the Institute Digital Communication Environments IDCE, HGK Basel FHNW. His work and teachings explore the volatility of digital media through glitch and reactivating older ‘new media’ through newer programming means. His open source projects (basil.js, XYscope, P5LIVE, p5.glitch) enable designers to program within Adobe InDesign, render vector graphics on vector displays, collaboratively live code visuals with p5.js, and glitch any media in real-time within the web browser. In 2021 he received Basel's Media Art Prize (Basler Medienkunstpreis) for p5.glitch and was a Processing Foundation Teaching Fellow.
